C & S Battery and Lead Company

The former C&S Battery and Lead Company site (Site), also known as the Smelter Supply Company, or the Sacramento Stucco Company site, is located at 860 Riske Lane in West Sacramento, CA. The Site is roughly 2.87 acres, is paved, fenced, and includes an office, warehouse and parking lot. From about 1973 to 1978, C&S Battery and Lead Company disassembled used automotive batteries to reclaim lead components. Thousands of automobile batteries were brought to the site weekly. High levels of lead detected in blood of workers and repeated failures by C&S Battery to address known hazards led the State Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal OSHA) to shut the plant down in May 1978.

This Site and surrounding areas are being evaluated by DTSC’s LABRIC Program.  More information regarding this site can be found in the EnviroStor Profile Report.
