Chiquita Canyon Landfill

Chiquita Canyon is a 639-acre landfill that provides Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding Los Angeles communities with waste disposal services. It is located in Castaic, California, approximately 3 miles west of Interstate 5 on State Route 126 in the Santa Clarita Valley. It is owned and operated by Waste Connections, an integrated solid waste services company, and has been operating for nearly 50 years.

After recent investigations, the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) has discovered multiple violations of California hazardous waste control laws at the landfill. On February 15, 2024, DTSC issued the Chiquita Canyon Landfill a Summary of Violations that included failing to minimize the potential release of hazardous waste – containing benzene in exceedance of hazardous waste thresholds – into the air, ground, or water.

On March 29, 2024, Chiquita Canyon Landfill was issued 3 violations related to the handling of hazardous waste

On February 16, 2024, DTSC issued a Prop. 65 warning to the local board of supervisors and the local health officer around the Chiquita Canyon Landfill for the “threatened illegal discharge” of hazardous waste. DTSC is working with local, state, and federal partners to support compliance efforts and keep local communities informed.

On November 30, 2023, local, state, and federal agencies formed a multi-agency critical action team (MCAT) to address concerns raised about the operations and overall state of the landfill. U.S. EPA is leading the multi-agency efforts. Members of the MCAT include: California Environmental Protection Agency; California Air Resources Board; CalRecycle; California Department of Toxic Substances Control; Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board; South Coast Air Quality Management District; and the Los Angeles County Departments of Public Works, Public Health and Planning.
