Community Protection and Hazardous Waste Reduction Initiative
The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is beginning the Community Protection and Hazardous Waste Reduction (Haz-Waste Reduction) Initiative. The goal of the Haz-Waste Initiative is to select up to three pilot scale projects which have the potential to accomplish the following:
- Reduce hazardous wastes that are generated, treated and disposed in significant quantities in California;
- Identify hazardous wastes generated in California that can pose substantial risks or hazards to human health or the environment; and
- Identify hazardous wastes that are generated, treated, or disposed in California communities that are disproportionately burdened by multiple sources of pollution.
If you have questions about the Haz-Waste Reduction Initiative, please contact DTSC at cphwr@dtsc.ca.gov.
For information about the Hazardous Waste Source Reduction and Management Review Act of 1989 (also known as SB 14), please see the SB 14 Introduction and Overview.
DTSC is currently seeking available hazardous waste generation and reduction related information for each of the following hazardous waste types:
- Lead acid batteries
- Contaminated soil
- Refinery waste
- Organic solvent waste
The information being sought could include information on activities not only in California but also in other states or countries where hazardous waste reduction efforts are being pursued. Click the link below for more information:
