Chemicals in Motor Vehicle Tires

Our 2021-2023 Priority Product Work Plan added motor vehicle tires as a new product category, in part due to concern about the potential for adverse impacts to aquatic organisms from exposure to chemicals in these products. We have proposed listing two new Priority Products related to this topic:

  1. Motor Vehicle Tires Containing Zinc
  2. Motor Vehicle Tires Containing 6PPD

On May 20, 2022, we initiated rulemaking to list motor vehicle tires containing 6PPD as a Priority Product.

We have also evaluated several other chemicals in motor vehicle tire, including:

  • Benzothiazoles
  • Chlorinated paraffins
  • 1,3-Diphenylguanidine
  • (Methoxymethyl) melamines
  • Octylphenol ethoxylates
  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)

Some of these compounds are harmful to the environment because they are toxic to fish or other aquatic organisms, are toxic to plants, persist a long time in the environment, or accumulate in the bodies of animals or people that are exposed to them over time. We prepared a document on these other chemicals that includes a short introduction and highlights questions that have come up during our research. We welcome ongoing input on these questions.
