Managing Hazardous Waste

We protect the environment and communities by ensuring compliance with hazardous waste laws

Scrap Metal Home

These pages provide information on the hazardous waste laws and regulations that generally apply to facilities engaged in scrap metal recycling. Scrap metal recycling facilities include feeder yards, dismantlers, and facilities with a metal crusher, baler, or shredder. Metal shredding facilities, which use special shredding techniques and equipment to process end-of-life vehicles, appliances, and other forms of scrap metal, are a unique subset of scrap metal recycling facilities. DTSC initiated an evaluation of metal shredding facilities to ensure that their treatment of metal shredder waste is adequately protective of human health and the environment. For more information about this initiative, please see DTSC’s Metal Shredding Facilities and Wastes (Implementation of SB 1249) webpage.
