Hazardous Waste Categories
Once a waste has been classified as a hazardous waste, it seems like the job is done, right? Not exactly. Once identified as a hazardous waste, it also is important to know what category of hazardous waste it belongs to:
- RCRA Hazardous Waste
- Non-RCRA Hazardous Waste (including Special Waste)
- Acute and Extremely Hazardous Waste
The category dictates:
- Land disposal restrictions
- Treatment standards
- Generator fees
- Disposal fees
The hazardous waste category also dictates DTSC’s discretionary authority for variances, hazardous waste management requirements, and whether tiered permitting may apply to the hazardous waste.
