Permitted Facilities on CalEnviroScreen
The California Communities Environmental Health Screening Tool Version 3.0 (CalEnviroScreen 3.0) is a screening methodology developed by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) on behalf of the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA.) The tool can be used to help identify California communities that are disproportionately burdened by multiple sources of pollution and most vulnerable to its effects, taking into account socioeconomic characteristics and underlying health status. It compares the relative burdens on each community, but is not an absolute measure of health risks or burdens. The tool uses data on 12 types of pollution and environmental factors and seven population characteristics and socioeconomic factors to create scores for each of the state’s ~8,000 census tracts. An area with a high score would be expected to experience higher impacts than areas with lower scores.
The map application below overlays information about DTSC’s permitted hazardous waste facilities with CalEnviroScreen 3.0 results. To get quick information about a specific facility, find it using the search tool, zoom in to the location, and click on the facility’s icon. To see the scores for pollution exposures, environmental conditions, population characteristics, and race/ ethnicity for a specific census tract, click on the desired location on the map.
This map is intended to be an educational tool for the public as well as a tool for DTSC’s Permitting staff and Public Participation Specialists. It is intended to improve the understanding of communities in proximity to hazardous waste facilities and enhance DTSC’s public outreach efforts, particularly in impacted communities.
